Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Chestnut Antpitta (Grallaria blakei). Considerable geographical differences in vocalizations, including within nominate subspecies and, possibly, obscura, indicate that some subspecies may be better treated as full species.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
spatiator Bangs, 1898 - Northern Colombia in Santa Marta Mts.
saltuensis Wetmore, 1946 - Perijá Mts on Venezuela-Colombia border. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Perija Antpitta (Grallaria saltuensis).
rufula Lafresnaye, 1843 - South-western Venezuela (eastern and western Táchira) and Andes of Colombia (eastern, northern part of west, and middle central ranges) south to extreme northern Peru.
cajamarcae (Chapman, 1927) - Western Andes of Peru in southern Cajamarca.
obscura von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1896 - Central Andes of Peru (south to Junín).
occabambae (Chapman, 1923) - South-eastern Peru (Cuzco) south-east to western Bolivia (western La Paz).
cochabambae Bond & Meyer de Schauensee, 1940 - Central Bolivia (northern Cochabamba, possibly also west to central La Paz).
