Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest, high altitude shrubland. From 1,200 - 3,600 m.

Subspecies
Was long considered conspecific with Watkins's Antpitta (Grallaria watkinsi), but distinct differences in voice, plumage and bare-part colours, and habitat, and no intermediate specimens or songs known from area of range overlap in south-western Ecuador. Racial affiliation of birds from Cerro Chinguela, in northern Peru, uncertain and tentatively included in nominate subspecies.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • perijana Phelps & Gilliard, 1940   -  Perijá Mts on northern Colombia-western Venezuela border.
  • nigrolineata Sclater, PL, 1890   -  Andes of Venezuela from northern Trujillo south to north-eastern Táchira.
  • avilae Hellmayr & Seilern, 1914   -  Northern Venezuelan Andes (southern Lara) and coastal mountains (east to Miranda).
  • ruficapilla Lafresnaye, 1842   -  Western, central and eastern Andes of Colombia south to central-western and south-eastern Ecuador, probably also including birds from Cerro Chinguela, in northern Peru.
  • connectens Chapman, 1923   -  South-western Ecuador in El Oro and Loja.
  • albiloris Taczanowski, 1880   -  Pacific slope of north-western Peru south to Lambayeque (possibly south to Ancash).
  • interior Zimmer, JT, 1934   -  Western slope of central Andes of Peru in Amazonas and San Martí­n.
