Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Giant Antpitta (Grallaria gigantea). Possibly conspecific, or, alternatively, subspecies lehmanni of Giant Antpitta (Grallaria gigantea) should perhaps be placed with this species.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
excelsa Berlepsch, 1893 - Perijá Mts in western Venezuela, possibly extending into adjacent Colombia, also Andes from Lara south to Táchira.
phelpsi Gilliard, 1939 - Coastal mountains of Venezuela in Aragua (Colonia Tovar).
Similar Species
Undulated Antpitta (Grallaria squamigera) which is smaller with less contrasting crown and no malar stripe.
