Subspecies
Subspecies fulvipectus, which differs vocally from other subspecies, possibly a separate species. Racial identity of birds from east-central Amazonian Brazil (R Purús east to R Madeira), however, is uncertain. Further study is needed.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
rubida Zimmer, JT, 1932 - North of R Amazon in south-eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador and north-eastern Peru; presumably also in immediately adjacent western Brazil.
nobilis Gould, 1855 - South of R Amazon from eastern Peru (southern from Huallaga Valley) east to west-central Brazil (east to at least R Purús, probably to R Madeira) and south to extreme north-western Bolivia.
fulvipectus Todd, 1927 - North-central Brazil at Santarem, left bank of R Tapajós; probably also including birds west to R Madeira and possibly those south to northern Rondônia.
