Subspecies
Should probably be split into two or more species, as birds in Amazonian region have different song from those in central America; geographical variation (in voice and plumage) across entire range, however, not well documented. Subspecies saturatus may contain more than one taxon, as birds from Magdalena Valley (Colombia) give same song as those in central America, whereas birds from Lara (north-western Venezuela) give the Amazonian song. The situation is difficult to assess, as songs of virescens and griseoventris are undescribed. Form olivaceus, described from northern Peru, synonymized with zamorae.

The following 14 subspecies are recognised:

  • umbrosus Ridgway, 1893   -  Caribbean slope from central Honduras south to western Panama, and Pacific slope of Costa Rica (south to Gulf of Nicoya).
  • hoffmanni (Cabanis, 1861)   -  South-western Costa Rica and western Panama (western Chiriquí).
  • panamensis Ridgway, 1908   -  Panama (from Coclé to Darién) and adjacent north-western Colombia.
  • virescens Todd, 1915   -  Western base of Santa Marta Mts, in northern Colombia.
  • griseoventris Aveledo & Ginés, 1950   -  Northern Colombia and north-western Venezuela in western Maracaibo Basin (from Perijá Mts south to northern Táchira and northern Mérida).
  • saturatus Ridgway, 1893   -  Venezuela north of R Apure and R Orinoco (west to eastern Maracaibo Basin and southern slope of Andes); Trinidad. Also Cauca, Magdalena and upper Sinú Valleys in northern Colombia.
  • connectens Chapman, 1914   -  Colombia east of Andes.
  • crissalis (Cabanis, 1861)   -  Extreme eastern Venezuela, the Guianas and north-eastern Brazil (Amapá, Pará).
  • zamorae Chapman, 1923   -  Eastern Ecuador, northern and north-eastern Peru and western Brazil (north of R Solimíµes, east to Codajás).
  • analis (D'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837)   -  Eastern and south-eastern Peru south of R Amazon (from Ucayali drainage) and northern Bolivia east to central Brazil (east to R Tapajós and Mato Grosso).
  • paraensis Novaes, 1957   -  Eastern Brazil from R Tapajós east to Belém and western Maranhío.
  • moniliger Sclater, PL, 1857   -  Caribbean slope from southern Mexico (southern from central Veraguas) east to Guatemala (except Petén).
  • pallidus Lawrence, 1882   -  Yucatan Peninsula (in south-eastern Yucatan, Campeche and Quintana Roo) and northern Guatemala (northern Petén).
  • intermedius Ridgway, 1908   -  Eastern Guatemala (presumed), Belize and north-western Honduras.
