Subspecies
Species was originally described in the genus Philydor, as Philydor albigularis, but that name preoccupied. Suspected by some authors to be possibly better returned to that genus, whereas others consider that it is most closely related to Buff-throated Foliage-gleaner (Automolus ochrolaemus) or even to Rufous-necked Foliage-gleaner (Syndactyla ruficollis). Further research is needed. Named form Philydor hylobius, previously believed by some to be an isolated population of Black-capped Foliage-gleaner (Philydor atricapillus), is invalid and represents the juvenile plumage of present species. Sight records from western Guyana presumed to pertain to nominate subspecies.
