Subspecies
Genus sometimes merged into a broadly defined Philydor. Forms a superspecies with Scaly-throated Foliage-gleaner (Anabacerthia variegaticeps), subspecies temporalis of which sometimes included in present species. Plumage variation in Andes appears to be clinal, with redder-backed central Peruvian populations of montana approaching appearance of yungae, specimens from Ayacucho more or less intermediate, also specimens from Bolivia (Cochabamba) darker than those from southern Peru and specimens from La Paz intermediate. It seems likely that a quantitative analysis, including specimens from the gaps in current samples, would reveal rather smooth clinal variation from southern Colombia to Bolivia or, alternatively, a number of diagnosable populations that are currently without taxonomic recognition.
Proposed subspecies jelskii, from central Peru, is based on discoloured specimen of montana.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
anxia (Bangs, 1902) - Santa Marta Mts of northern Colombia.
perijana Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1952 - Perijá Mts of north-western Venezuela and northern Colombia.
venezuelana (Hellmayr, 1911) - Mountains of north-central Venezuela (Yaracuy, and Carabobo east to Distrito Federal, also interior range in Aragua and Miranda).
striaticollis Lafresnaye, 1840 - Andes of western Venezuela (Lara, Trujillo, north-western Barinas, Táchira) and Colombia (all three ranges, except in Nariño).
montana (Tschudi, 1844) - Eastern slope of Andes in south-eastern Colombia (Nariño) south to central Peru (south to Junín).
yungae (Chapman, 1923) - Andes from southern Peru (Cuzco, Puno) south to central Bolivia (east to western Santa Cruz).
