Subspecies
Genus has no obvious close relatives within the family. Plumage similarities suggest that this species is most closely related to Grey-crested Cachalote (Pseudoseisura unirufa) and Caatinga Cachalote (Pseudoseisura cristata).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

lophotes (Reichenbach, 1853) - Southern Bolivia (southern Santa Cruz, eastern Tarija) and western Paraguay.
argentina Parkes, 1960 - Northern and central Argentina (Catamarca, Santiago del Estero and Corrientes south to Mendoza, La Pampa and Buenos Aires), extreme south-eastern Brazil (western Rio Grande do Sul) and Uruguay.
