Subspecies
Genus probably closest to Premnoplex, and this supported by anatomical data. Both genera merged with Margarornis by some authors.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

venezuelanus Phelps and Phelps Jr, 1956 - North-western Venezuela (Perij� Mts, and Andes of south-western T�chira).
guttuliger (Sclater, 1864) - Andes of Colombia (all three ranges), Ecuador and Peru (south to Puno).
