Subspecies
Genus merged into Margarornis by some authors, whereas others suspect that it is closer to Premnoplex or Premnornis. Anatomical data are consistent with the idea that all are each others' closest relatives, but that present genus does not fit into any of the others. Species was at one time mistakenly considered to be a subspecies of Stripe-breasted Spinetail (Synallaxis cinnamomea).

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • obscurodorsalis Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1948   -  Cerro Paraque, in south-eastern Venezuela (extreme north-western Amazonas).
  • duidae Chapman, 1939   -  Tepuis of southern Venezuela in central and southern Amazonas (Mt Duida, Cerro Huachamacari, Serranía Parú).
  • mayri (Phelps Jr, 1977)   -  Cerro Jaua (southern Bolívar).
  • adusta (Salvin & Godman, 1884)   -  South-eastern Venezuela (Mt Roraima and associated tepuis in south-eastern Bolívar), northern Brazil (Mt Roraima) and western Guyana (Mt Tewk-quay).
