Eastern Argentina (Santa Fe and Entre Ríos south to Río Negro and southern Buenos Aires), extreme south-eastern Brazil (south-eastern Rio Grande do Sul) and Uruguay.

Plumage similarities have suggested to some authors that this and Austral Canastero (Asthenes anthoides) are sister-species. Others suggest that sister-taxon is Puna Canastero (Asthenes sclateri).
