Subspecies
Close relationship to the superspecies formed by Surf Cinclodes (Cinclodes taczanowskii) and Seaside Cinclodes (Cinclodes nigrofumosus) or to Dark-bellied Cinclodes (Cinclodes patagonicus) suggested by plumage and ecological similarities. Alternatively, considered by some to represent a distinct lineage within the genus on basis of general morphology.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

maculirostris Dabbene, 1917 - Extreme southern South America, on Dawson I, Brecknock Peninsula (south-western Tierra del Fuego), Navarino I, Cape Horn Archipelago and Staten I. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Black Cinclodes (Cinclodes maculirostris).
antarcticus (Garnot, 1826) - Falkland Is.
