Subspecies
May prove to be a member of an obligate ant-following clade. Forms a superspecies with White-cheeked Antbird (Gymnopithys leucaspis). Subspecies may represent only clinal variation.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
pallidus (Cherrie, 1909) - Southern Venezuela (Bolívar except R Cuyuni drainage, Amazonas except vicinity of Pica Yavita-Pimichín).
pallidigula Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1947 - Vicinity of Pica Yavita-Pimichín, in extreme southern Venezuela (south-western Amazonas).
rufigula (Boddaert, 1783) - Extreme eastern Venezuela (R Cuyuni drainage), the Guianas and eastern Brazil north of R Amazon (R Negro east to Amapá).
