Subspecies
Myrmeciza laemosticta has been split into Dull-mantled Antbird (Sipia laemosticta) and Magdalena Antbird (Sipia palliata) following SACC (2011).

Genus appears not to represent a monophyletic grouping, but traditional arrangement maintained pending further phylogenetic study. Forms a superspecies with Esmeraldas Antbird (Sipia nigricauda), female of which formerly treated as a subspecies of present species. Probably also close to Stub-tailed Antbird (Sipia berlepschi). Described subspecies bolivari (central Colombia) and venezuelae (Venezuela) synonymized with palliata, which itself may possibly intergrade with nominate in north-western Colombia.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • laemosticta (Salvin, 1865)   -  Eastern Costa Rica (Caribbean slope) and Panama (locally on both slopes eastern from Veraguas and San Blas).
  • palliata Todd, 1917   -  Northern and north-central Colombia (northern slope of Andes from Cesar south to Córdoba and southern in Magdalena Valley to Caldas) and north-western Venezuela (Zulia, Mérida). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Magdalena Antbird (Sipia palliata).
