Subspecies
Similar to other members of genus in morphology, vocalizations and behaviour. A taxonomic study is needed. Subspecies possibly constitute more than one species, while some may represent only clinal plumage variation. Revised interface between nominate and subspecies elegans is based on preliminary analysis of vocalizations. In addition, latter intergrades with described subspecies napensis (eastern Ecuador, north-eastern Peru) with no clear boundary between them and the two considered better synonymized pending further review.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • elegans (Sclater, PL, 1857)   -  Southern Venezuela (western Bolívar, southern Amazonas), extreme north-western Amazonian Brazil (northern Roraima, north-western Amazonas in upper R Negro region), and south-eastern Colombia (Meta, Vaupés) south to central Peru (north of R Amazon, west of R Ucayali).
  • myotherinus (Spix, 1825)   -  Extreme eastern Peru (east of R Ucayali), south-western Amazonian Brazil (western Amazonas, Acre) and north-western Bolivia (Pando south to La Paz, Cochabamba and west-central Santa Cruz).
  • incanus Hellmayr, 1929   -  North-western Amazonian Brazil (northern bank of R Solimíµes between R Japurá and R Ií§a).
  • ardesiacus Todd, 1927   -  R Japurá east to lower R Negro.
  • proximus Todd, 1927   -  Southern bank of R Amazon between R Purus and R Madeira.
  • sororius (Hellmayr, 1910)   -  South-central Amazonian Brazil (south-eastern Amazonas, Rondônia).
  • ochrolaemus (Hellmayr, 1906)   -  Brazil southern of R. Amazon (R. Madeira to Tocantins, Mato Grosso). East from R Madeira and R Roosevelt to R Tocantins and southern Marajó I, and south to south-western and central Mato Grosso.
