Subspecies
Appears to form a species group with Rio Branco Antbird (Cercomacra carbonaria), Jet Antbird (Cercomacra nigricans) and Bananal Antbird (Cercomacra ferdinandi) on basis of plumage, vocalizations and ecology, with Manu Antbird (Cercomacra manu) probably sister to the group.
