Subspecies
Members of genus form a well-defined clade, and appear to be closely related to Hypocnemis. Most closely related to Striated Antbird (Drymophila devillei). Genetic analysis and geographical variation in vocalizations indicate that further study and redefinition of populations is still needed. Relationships among currently defined subspecies unclear at northern end of eastern Andes (Norte de Santander, in Colombia), where three subspecies may be parapatric or may intergrade.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • klagesi (Sclater, 1855)   -  Northern Venezuela (except Sierra de Perijá) and northern Colombia (eastern slope of eastern Andes in southern Norte de Santander). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Klages's Antbird (Drymophila klagesi).
  • aristeguietana Aveledo and Pérez, 1994   -  North-western Venezuela (Sierra de Perijá). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Klages's Antbird (Drymophila klagesi).
  • hellmayri Todd, 1915   -  Northern Colombia (Santa Marta region and eastern slope of eastern Andes in northern Norte de Santander). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Santa Marta Antbird (Drymophila hellmayri).
  • caudata (P. L. Sclater, 1855)   -  Andes of Colombia (except northern end of eastern range on eastern slope), Ecuador (both slopes), Peru (eastern slope) and north-western Bolivia (eastern slope in La Paz).
