Subspecies
Morphological, vocal and molecular studies indicate that, with exception of Narrow-billed Antwren (Formicivora iheringi), all species placed in current genus form a well-defined group. Recent extensive morphological and vocal study suggests that closest relatives are Rusty-backed Antwren (Formicivora rufa) and Parana Antwren (Formicivora acutirostris). Close relationship with former also supported by genetic study. Geographical differences in voice and striking differences in female plumages strongly suggest that some subspecies represent separate species. Further study is required. On other hand, fumosa possibly indistinguishable from intermedia.

Described form deluzae known from single specimen from Rio de Janeiro (Brazil); possibility that it represents a distinct subspecies considered unconfirmed.

The following 9 subspecies are recognised:

  • alticincta (Boddaert, 1783)   -  Pearl Is, southern Panama.
  • hondae (Chapman, 1914)   -  North-western Colombia (Atlántico south to northern Antioquia and Bolívar, southern in Magdalena Valley to Huila).
  • intermedia Cabanis, 1847   -  Northern Colombia (Magdalena, La Guajira, César) and northern Venezuela (northern Zulia east to Sucre and Monagas, including Margarita I). Also Chacachacare I, off Trinidad.
  • tobagensis Dalmas, 1900   -  Tobago.
  • fumosa (Cory, 1913)   -  Along northern base of Andes in north-eastern Colombia (eastern Norte de Santander) and Venezuela (southern Zulia and Trujillo south to Táchira).
  • rufiventris Carriker, 1936   -  Eastern Colombia (Meta and Guainía south to Caquetá) and southern Venezuela (western Amazonas except extreme north).
  • orenocensis Hellmayr, 1904   -  Southern Venezuela (south of R Orinoco in Bolívar and extreme northern Amazonas).
  • grisea (Boddaert, 1783)   -  Guyana, coastal Surinam and French Guiana, and northern and eastern Brazil (drainage of R Branco, lower R Negro east to Amapá and, south of R Amazon, eastern from R Madeira apart from few scattered records west of it to western Amazonas, and south to Mato Grosso, Goiás, Bahia and, locally, to eastern Minas Gerais and northern Rio de Janeiro).
  • deluzae Ménétriès, 1835   -  Known from a single specimen from south-eastern Brazil (Rio de Janeiro).
