Subspecies
Relationships with other members of genus unclear. Differences in morphology and vocalizations suggest that more than one species may be involved. A re-examination is required.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
exiguus Nelson, 1912 - Eastern Panama (Darién), north-western Colombia (Córdoba, Bolívar) and western Ecuador (Esmeraldas, Los Ríos).
frater Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1880 - Northern and southern Colombia (base of Andes in La Guajira, Boyacá, Meta, Putumayo) south to eastern Peru and northern Bolivia (Pando and La Paz east to Santa Cruz), also northern and southern Venezuela (Zulia east to Monagas, and Bolívar and northern Amazonas), extreme southern Guyana, and extreme northern and south-central Amazonian Brazil (northern Roraima, and from southern Pará and western Maranhío south-west to Rondônia and northern Mato Grosso).
scapularis (zu Wied-Neuwied, 1831) - Eastern Brazil (coastal Paraíba south to Alagoas, and in eastern Bahia, eastern Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Northern Rufous-winged Antwren (Herpsilochmus scapularis).
rufimarginatus (Temminck, 1822) - Eastern Paraguay (east of R Paraguay), extreme north-eastern Argentina (Misiones) and south-eastern Brazil (Sío Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Paraná, north-eastern Santa Catarina).
