North-eastern Brazil locally from north-eastern Maranhío east to Rio Grande do Norte, south to Sergipe and north-eastern Bahia.

Voice
Song is a fast ascending series of 14-20 notes, levelling off on the last 4-5, in 2-3 seconds. Female song is similar but shorter. Also a short, barking call.

Subspecies
Thought to be most closely related to Large-billed Antwren (Herpsilochmus longirostris) on basis of plumage and distribution, although vocalizations not closely similar.
