Habitat
Canopy and subcanopy of humid montane forest, prefering dense, tall evergreen forest, with heavy moss and epiphytic growth on the trees. From 1,000 - 2,500 m.
Eastern slope of Andes in Peru (Huánuco south to Cuzco).

Estimated population is unknown (2010).
Status NT
Habitat destruction and degradation due to accelerating deforestation as land is cleared for cattle ranching and soy production, facilitated by expansion of the road network, is the main threat.

Subspecies
Formerly treated as a subspecies of Bahia Antwren (Herpsilochmus pileatus) and considered with latter to be part of a clade that also includes Caatinga Antwren (Herpsilochmus sellowi), Black-capped Antwren (Herpsilochmus atricapillus) and Ash-throated Antwren (Herpsilochmus parkeri).
