Subspecies
Appears to be closely related to Ashy Antwren (Myrmotherula grisea) on basis of habitat and vocalizations, also to Unicolored Antwren (Myrmotherula unicolor) and Alagoas Antwren (Myrmotherula snowi) of Brazilian Atlantic Forest, the four together termed the "Plain-winged Myrmotherula group". They are often grouped with White-flanked Antwren (Myrmotherula axillaris), Rio de Janeiro Antwren (Myrmotherula fluminensis), Slaty Antwren (Myrmotherula schisticolor)Ihering's Antwren (Myrmotherula iheringi), Salvadori's Antwren (Myrmotherula minor), Alagoas Antwren (Myrmotherula snowi), Long-winged Antwren (Myrmotherula longipennis), Band-tailed Antwren (Myrmotherula urosticta) and Grey Antwren (Myrmotherula menetriesii) as the "grey antwren assemblage", although this grouping possibly not monophyletic.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • yavii Zimmer, JT & Phelps, 1948   -  Southern Venezuela (north-western Bolívar, Amazonas except Cerro Camani) and adjacent Brazil (extreme northern Amazonas).
  • camanii Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1952   -  Cerro Camani, in northern Amazonas (Venezuela).
  • inornata Sclater, PL, 1890   -  South-eastern Bolívar and adjacent Brazil (extreme northern Roraima); observations from the Guianas require confirmation.
  • behni Berlepsch & Leverkühn, 1890   -  Eastern Andean slope in south-central Colombia (locally in Meta and Nariño) and eastern Ecuador (locally in Sucumbios, Napo and Pastaza).
