Subspecies
Relationships uncertain. Often grouped with White-flanked Antwren (Myrmotherula axillaris), Rio de Janeiro Antwren (Myrmotherula fluminensis), Salvadori's Antwren (Myrmotherula minor), Salvadori's Antwren (Myrmotherula minor), Plain-winged Antwren (Myrmotherula behni), Ashy Antwren (Myrmotherula grisea), Unicolored Antwren (Myrmotherula unicolor), Alagoas Antwren (Myrmotherula snowi), Long-winged Antwren (Myrmotherula longipennis), Band-tailed Antwren (Myrmotherula urosticta) and Grey Antwren (Myrmotherula menetriesii) as the "grey antwren assemblage", although this grouping possibly not monophyletic. Geographical distribution and diagnosability of subspecies requires re-examination.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • heteroptera Todd, 1927   -  South-western Amazonian Brazil (headwaters of R Juruá east to R Madeira), south-eastern Peru (eastern Madre de Dios) and extreme north-western Bolivia (western Pando).
  • iheringi Snethlage, 1914   -  South-central Amazonian Brazil (western bank of R Tapajós and along drainages of R Jiparaná and R Roosevelt south to Rondônia).
  • oreni Miranda et al., 2013   -  South-western Amazonia, in south-eastern Peru, northern Bolivia (Pando) and adjacent Brazil (eastern Acre).
