Habitat
Interior of undisturbed and old second growth forest in humid regions where trees are festooned with mosses, bromeliads and other epiphytic growth. Second growth is only tolerated if adjacent to essentially mature forest. Almost always found near water, either in swampy forest, or close to fast-flowing streams. From sea-level - 800 m.

Subspecies
Close relationship to Slaty Antwren (Myrmotherula schisticolor) and Rio Suno Antwren (Myrmotherula sunensis) suggested by similarities in morphology, behaviour and vocalizations. Often grouped with those and White-flanked Antwren (Myrmotherula axillaris), Rio de Janeiro Antwren (Myrmotherula fluminensis), Ihering's Antwren (Myrmotherula iheringi), Plain-winged Antwren (Myrmotherula behni), Ashy Antwren (Myrmotherula grisea), Unicolored Antwren (Myrmotherula unicolor), Alagoas Antwren (Myrmotherula snowi), Long-winged Antwren (Myrmotherula longipennis), Band-tailed Antwren (Myrmotherula urosticta) and Grey Antwren (Myrmotherula menetriesii) as the "grey antwren assemblage", although this grouping possibly not monophyletic. Specimens from south-western Amazonia tentatively assigned to this species by earlier authors, but identity of these requires substantiation, including further field studies and vocal and molecular analysis; may represent a distinct species.
No subspecies.
Similar Species
No other Myrmotherula has barred undertail-coverts. Male luctuosa of White-flanked Antwren (Myrmotherula axillaris) has silvery-grey flanks and more extensive black bib, female has contrastingly paler flanks. Both sexes of Band-tailed Antwren (Myrmotherula urosticta) have broad, white tail tip.
