Subspecies
Vocalizations suggest it is sister-species to Klages's Antwren (Myrmotherula klagesi). Genetic and morphological analyses indicate that both are part of a monophyletic group that also includes Pygmy Antwren (Myrmotherula brachyura), Moustached Antwren (Myrmotherula ignota), Guianan Streaked Antwren (Myrmotherula surinamensis), Amazonian Streaked Antwren (Myrmotherula multostriata), Pacific Antwren (Myrmotherula pacifica), Cherrie's Antwren (Myrmotherula cherriei), Sclater's Antwren (Myrmotherula sclateri) and Yellow-throated Antwren (Myrmotherula ambigua) (the "streaked antwren assemblage"). Plumage distinctions among subspecies are not entirely clear, and ranges listed below are tentative. Furthermore, taxonomic status of recently discovered population inhabiting lowland flooded forest in Loreto (Peru) uncertain. Further study is required.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
soderstromi Gyldenstolpe, 1930 - Eastern slope of Andes in southern Colombia (Putumayo) and northern Ecuador (Napo).
pseudoaustralis Gyldenstolpe, 1930 - Eastern slope in southern Ecuador (Morona-Santiago, Zamora-Chinchipe) and northern Peru (south to Pasco).
longicauda Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1894 - Central Peru (Junín).
australis Chapman, 1923 - South-eastern Peru (Cuzco, Madre de Dios, Puno) and north-western Bolivia (La Paz, southern Beni, Cochabamba).
