Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Yellow-throated Antwren (Myrmotherula ambigua). Genetic and morphological analyses indicate that both species are part of a monophyletic group that also includes Pygmy Antwren (Myrmotherula brachyura), Moustached Antwren (Myrmotherula ignota), Guianan Streaked Antwren (Myrmotherula surinamensis), Amazonian Streaked Antwren (Myrmotherula multostriata), Pacific Antwren (Myrmotherula pacifica), Cherrie's Antwren (Myrmotherula cherriei), Klages's Antwren (Myrmotherula klagesi) and Stripe-chested Antwren (Myrmotherula longicauda), (the "streaked antwren assemblage"). Form described as Myrmotherula kermiti ("Kermit's Antwren") was based on variants of present species.
