Subspecies
Myrmotherula brachyura (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) was split into Pygmy Antwren (Myrmotherula brachyura) and Moustached Antwren (Myrmotherula ignota) following Stotz et al. (1996). This treatment has been further revised by SACC (2005) who include Short-billed Antwren (Myrmotherula obscura) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993), within Moustached Antwren (Myrmotherula ignota).
Genetic and morphological analyses indicate that this species and Pygmy Antwren (Myrmotherula brachyura), Guianan Streaked Antwren (Myrmotherula surinamensis), Amazonian Streaked Antwren (Myrmotherula multostriata), Pacific Antwren (Myrmotherula pacifica), Cherrie's Antwren (Myrmotherula cherriei), Klages's Antwren (Myrmotherula klagesi), Stripe-chested Antwren (Myrmotherula longicauda), Sclater's Antwren (Myrmotherula sclateri) and Yellow-throated Antwren (Myrmotherula ambigua) represent a monophyletic group (the "streaked antwren assemblage"). Closely related to Pygmy Antwren (Myrmotherula brachyura), and nominate subspecies formerly considered conspecific, but differs in vocalizations and plumage. Subspecies obscura often treated as a separate species, but vocally indistinguishable from nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
ignota Griscom, 1929 - Eastern Panama (Caribbean slope in Canal area and San Blas, Pacific slope in eastern Panamá and Darién), western and northern Colombia (Pacific slope and along northern base of Andes east to Santander) and north-western Ecuador (Esmeraldas, south-western Imbabura, north-western Pichincha).
obscura Zimmer, JT, 1932 - South-central and eastern Colombia (locally along base of Andes southern from Meta, and in Guianía and Vaupés), eastern Ecuador, north-eastern Peru (south to Pasco and Ucayali), and south-western and west-central Amazonian Brazil (extreme south-west.
