Subspecies
Relationships to other genera unclear. Species currently placed in genus appear to be related on basis of morphology and behaviour, although their nest architecture is somewhat variable. Forms a superspecies with Bluish-slate Antshrike (Thamnomanes schistogynus) and formerly treated as conspecific.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
glaucus Cabanis, 1847 - Southern Venezuela (Bolívar, Amazonas), the Guianas, eastern Colombia (southern from Meta and Vichada), northern Brazil (northern Amazonas east to Amapá), eastern Ecuador and north-eastern Peru (north of R Amazon and west of R Ucayali, south to northern Ucayali).
persimilis Hellmayr, 1907 - Central Brazil south of R Amazon (lower R Juruá and lower R Purus east to left bank of R Tapajós, south to northern Rondônia and western Mato Grosso) and extreme north-eastern Bolivia (north-eastern Santa Cruz).
simillimus Gyldenstolpe, 1951 - South-central Amazonian Brazil: known only from middle R Purus.
hoffmannsi Hellmayr, 1906 - East-central Brazil south of R Amazon (from right bank of R Tapajós east to western Maranhío, south to north-eastern Mato Grosso).
caesius (Temminck, 1820) - Coastal eastern Brazil (Pernambuco south to Rio de Janeiro, and inland in R Doce drainage in Minas Gerais).
