Habitat
Lower stratum of tall primary or little-disturbed, lowland Atlantic forest. From sea-level - 800 m.

Range (Guide)
Brazil (B).

South-eastern Brazil from southern Bahia south to eastern Minas Gerais and extreme northern Rio de Janeiro.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation is the main threat.

Habits
Pairs or singles, and associates with mixed-species flocks.

Food
Arthropods, including katydids, stick insects, pupas and insect eggs, gleaned from leaves and twigs.

Voice
A 2-3 second series of c.10 melancholy, whistled notes, rising at start then fading.

Subspecies
Relationships of genus not clearly established. Preliminary molecular evidence suggests affiliation with Thamnophilus, and morphological characteristics have connected it with Thamnomanes. Species was formerly treated as conspecific with geographically remote White-streaked Antvireo (Dysithamnus leucostictus), and incorrectly transferred to Thamnomanes.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Myrmotherula antwrens are smaller. Cinereous Antshrike (Thamnomanes caesius) is larger, and lacks covert markings and black on chest.
