Subspecies
Relationships uncertain. Subspecies gularis, aequatorialis and rufescens possibly form a separate species. Molecular and vocal analyses needed. Plumage differences between some subspecies probably clinal.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • anabatinus Sclater & Salvin, 1860   -  Atlantic slope of south-eastern Mexico (eastern Oaxaca, Tabasco, Chiapas), Guatemala, Belize and Honduras.
  • saturatus Ridgway, 1908   -  Nicaragua (Atlantic slope), Costa Rica (both slopes except north-western Pacific) and extreme western Panama (western Chiriquí, western Bocas del Toro).
  • coronatus Nelson, 1912   -  Panama (except extreme west) and north-western Colombia (Atlantic slope in Córdoba).
  • intermedius Chapman, 1914   -  Pacific slope in western Colombia and Ecuador.
  • gularis Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1956   -  Extreme north-western Venezuela (Táchira), possibly extending into north-eastern Colombia.
  • aequatorialis Sclater, PL, 1862   -  Eastern Andean foothills in Colombia (except perhaps north-east), Ecuador and extreme northern Peru (north of R Marañón in northern Amazonas). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Eastern Russet Antshrike (Thamnistes aequatorialis).
  • rufescens Cabanis, 1873   -  Eastern Andean foothills from Peru (south of R Marañón) south to western and central Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Rufescent Antshrike (Thamnistes rufescens).
