Subspecies
Relationships uncertain. Genetic studies indicate that genus is not closely related to Thamnophilus, but perhaps closest to the "stipple-throated assemblage" of Myrmotherula antwrens. Nevertheless, it is maintained in its traditional position in the taxonomic sequence, pending further study. Described plumage variation of forms maculipennis (southern Colombia and north-eastern Peru) and purusiana (western Brazil) appears to be clinal and therefore these forms are merged with nominate, but further study is required.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • occipitalis Zimmer, JT, 1932   -  Southern Venezuela (western and southern Bolívar, Amazonas), northern Brazil (northern Amazonas, Roraima, north-western Pará) and adjacent extreme eastern Colombia, and north-eastern and extreme southern Guyana, coastal Surinam and, locally, western and central French Guiana.
  • stellaris (Spix, 1825)   -  Extreme southern Colombia (near base of Andes), eastern Ecuador and north-eastern and eastern Peru east through southern Amazonian Brazil (south to Rondônia, northern Mato Grosso, southern Pará, western Maranhío), and south to north-western and north-eastern Bolivia.
  • maculipennis (Sclater, PL, 1855)   -  South-eastern Colombia south to central Peru.
  • purusiana Todd, 1927   -  South-eastern Peru, northern Bolivia, and west central Brazil south of the Amazon, east to the Madeira River.
