by Andrew Spencer from Santa Cecilia track, above Paquisha, Zamora-Chinchipe, Ecuador (call)
Subspecies
Apparently closely related to Fiery-throated Fruiteater (Pipreola chlorolepidota). Speciation probably comparatively recent, but the two now exhibit extensive geographical overlap, although different altitudinal ranges. Subspecies squamipectus rather distinct, and separated from nominate by wide gap in northern Peru and may perhaps merit full species status.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
squamipectus (Chapman, 1925) - Eastern slope of Andes from northern Ecuador south to northern Peru (south to San Martín). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Scaly-breasted Fruiteater (Pipreola squamipectus).
frontalis (Sclater, 1858) - Eastern slope from central Peru south to central Bolivia (western Santa Cruz).
