Eastern slope of Andes from southern Colombia (Cauca, western Caquetá) south to central and south-eastern Peru (south to Pasco, also isolated record in extreme eastern Puno).

Habitat destruction and degradation through conversion to agriculture and cattle pasture, mining operations, oil exploration and logging, are the main threats.

Apparently closely related to Scarlet-breasted Fruiteater (Pipreola frontalis). Speciation probably comparatively recent, but the two now exhibit extensive geographical overlap, although different altitudinal ranges.
