Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist montane forest. From 1,200 - 2,300 m.

Range (Guide)

Colombia (B), Ecuador (B), Peru (B).

Southern Colombia (head of Magdalena Valley, and eastern slope of Andes) and eastern slope in Ecuador and Peru (south to northern Cajamarca, including western slope in Za�a Valley).

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Closely related to Golden-breasted Fruiteater (Pipreola aureopectus), Orange-breasted Fruiteater (Pipreola jucunda) and Masked Fruiteater (Pipreola pulchra), and all sometimes treated as conspecific, but plumages distinct, and no indication of intergradation.
