Subspecies
Genus sometimes merged with Ampelion, but differs in bill structure and juvenile plumage. Both genera, along with Zaratornis, appear to form a clade, which suggested by anatomical research and recent genetic data as being closely related to Phytotoma.
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Bay-vented Cotinga (Doliornis sclateri) is similar, but paler overall with less rich underparts colouration confined to undertail-coverts.
