Subspecies
Phylogenetic affinity of present species unknown. Has been suggested that it is closely related to One-colored Becard (Pachyramphus homochrous), Pink-throated Becard (Pachyramphus minor) and Rose-throated Becard (Pachyramphus aglaiae), and all are sometimes combined in a separate genus, Platypsaris, differing from present genus in nest shape and placement, as well as in some vocal and minor morphological characters. An isolated population in south-eastern Ecuador (southern Zamora-Chinchipe), more than 1000 km north of previously recorded northern limit in southern Peru, tentatively included in subspecies audax, but may represent an undescribed taxon.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
validus (Lichtenstein, 1823) - Eastern and southern Brazil (Marajó I east to Rio Grande do Norte, south to Mato Grosso and Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Bolivia (Chiquitos), Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina (south to Santa Fe).
audax (Cabanis, 1873) - Extreme south-eastern Ecuador (southern Zamora-Chinchipe), south-eastern Peru (both slope of Andes southern from Ayacucho and Cuzco), north-west, central and southern Bolivia (La Paz south to Tarija) and north-western Argentina (Saltá, Tucumán, Catamarca, La Rioja, Córdoba).
