Subspecies
Phylogenetic affinity of present species unknown. Has been suggested that it is closely related to One-colored Becard (Pachyramphus homochrous), Pink-throated Becard (Pachyramphus minor) and Crested Becard (Pachyramphus validus), or even conspecific with One-colored Becard (Pachyramphus homochrous) and Pink-throated Becard (Pachyramphus minor) and all are sometimes combined in a separate genus, Platypsaris, differing from present genus in nest shape and placement, as well as in some vocal and minor morphological characters. Racial variation poorly understood.
The following 8 subspecies are recognised:
albiventris (Lawrence, 1867) - South-western United States (south-eastern Arizona), western Mexico (Sonora and Pacific slope from southern Sinaloa south to northern Guerrero, also up river valleys east to Chihuahua, Zacatecas and Morelos).
insularis (Ridgway, 1887) - Tres Marías Is, off western Mexico (Nayarit).
gravis (van Rossem, 1938) - Extreme southern USA (southern Texas) and coastal region of north-eastern Mexico (Tamaulipas south to Nuevo León and San Luis Potosí).
aglaiae (Lafresnaye, 1839) - Southern Mexico (central and southern Guerrero east to southern Oaxaca and west-central Veracruz).
sumichrasti (Nelson, 1897) - South-eastern Mexico (central Veracruz south to northern and south-eastern Oaxaca, east to Campeche) and western Guatemala.
yucatanensis (Ridgway, 1906) - Yucatán Peninsula.
hypophaeus (Ridgway, 1891) - Caribbean slope from central Belize and Guatemala south to western Panama.
latirostris Bonaparte, 1854 - Pacific slope from northern El Salvador south to north-western Costa Rica.
