Subspecies
Phylogenetic affinity of present species unknown. Specimens from Honduras not racially identifiable; tentatively included in australis, but could belong with itzensis.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

uropygialis Nelson, 1899 - Western Mexico (southern Sonora south to Guerrero). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Western Grey-collared Becard (Pachyramphus uropygialis).
major (Cabanis, 1847) - Eastern Mexico (southern Nuevo Le�n and San Luis Potos�� south to Oaxaca and western Chiapas).
itzensis Nelson, 1901 - South-eastern Mexico (Campeche, Yucat�n, Quintana Roo).
matudai Phillips, AR, 1966 - Southern Mexico (Pacific slope of Chiapas) and Guatemala.
australis Miller, W & Griscom, 1925 - Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and north-central Nicaragua.
