Subspecies
Has been hypothesized, on basis of hole-nesting behaviour, that genus may be most closely related to Myiodynastes, with this clade basal to a "Tyrannus group" that also includes Megarynchus, Tyrannopsis, Empidonomus and Griseotyrannus. However, molecular-sequence data do not support an affinity between these two genera, but strongly suggest that present genus is part of that group to the exclusion of Myiodynastes. Molecular data strongly indicate that present species and Lemon-browed Flycatcher (Conopias cinchoneti) are sister-species, most closely related to a clade consisting of White-ringed Flycatcher (Conopias albovittatus) and Yellow-throated Flycatcher (Conopias parvus). Subspecies widely separated geographically, possibly represent two separate species.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
berlepschi Snethlage, E, 1914 - Venezuela (southern Bolívar), extreme north-eastern Ecuador (eastern Sucumbíos, eastern Napo), northern Brazil (both banks of lower Amazon, from Manacapurú and Tefé east to í"bidos and Santarém, also Maranhío), eastern Peru (Loreto, Ucayali, Madre de Dios) and north-central Bolivia (Cochabamba).
trivirgatus (Wied, 1831) - South-eastern Brazil (south-eastern Bahia south to Paraná), eastern Paraguay (eastern from Paraguarí) and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones, north-eastern Corrientes).
