Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
pallidiventris (Hellmayr, 1929) - East-central Brazil (eastern Pará east to Maranhío and Piauí, south to northern Goiás).
aurantioatrocristatus (d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837) - Breeds northern and eastern Bolivia (southern from Beni), west-central and southern Brazil (southern Mato Grosso east to western Minas Gerais, south to Mato Grosso do Sul, extreme western Paraná, Santa Catarina and western Rio Grande do Sul), northern and central Argentina (south to Mendoza, La Pampa, northern Río Negro and Buenos Aires), Paraguay (especially west of R Paraguay) and Uruguay; migrates north to western Amazonia.
