Subspecies
Present genus formerly believed to be allied to flatbills (Tolmomyias and Rhynchocyclus), but apparently belongs instead with Myiarchus and relatives, based on cranial, syringeal and nesting characters. Molecular data is still lacking. Formerly placed in genus Tolmomyias.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
venezuelense Phelps & Gilliard, 1941 - North-western Venezuela (western Trujillo, western Apure, western Barinas, north-eastern Yaracuy, northern Aragua), and probably into adjacent Colombia.
pectorale Zimmer, JT & Phelps, 1947 - Southern Venezuela, south-eastern Colombia and eastern Ecuador, probably also adjacent Brazil and Peru.
bolivianum Zimmer, JT, 1939 - Eastern Peru (southern Loreto, Ucayali, Cuzco, Madre de Dios), Brazil (Amazonas, Mato Grosso and Pará south to Acre and Rondônia) and northern Bolivia (Beni, La Paz, Cochabamba, north-eastern Santa Cruz).
megacephalum (Swainson, 1835) - South-eastern Paraguay (Canendiyu, Alto Paraná), north-eastern Argentina (Misiones) and south-eastern Brazil (eastern Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo south to Sío Paulo).
