Subspecies
In the past sometimes considered conspecific with Ash-throated Flycatcher (Myiarchus cinerascens), but differs in mouth-lining colour, vocalizations, rectrix pattern, wing formula, and morphometrics. There is no evidence of hybridization between the two. Nominate subspecies intergrades with flavidior in southern Mexico (Oaxaca), southern Nicaragua and Costa Rica (Guanacaste), and with inquietus over larger zone in Oaxaca and all three subspecies occur in both pure and hybrid forms in Oaxaca. Further study is required.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • inquietus Salvin & Godman, 1889   -  Western and central Mexico (west-central Sonora south to Chiapas, and east to southern San Luis Potosí and Hidalgo).
  • nuttingi Ridgway, 1882   -  Arid interior valleys from southern Mexico (Oaxaca and Chiapas) through Guatemala (R Motagua), Honduras (Choluteca and Comayagua Valleys) and western Nicaragua (arid slopes in vicinity of Matagalpa) to north-western Costa Rica (tropical deciduous woodland of Guanacaste).
  • flavidior van Rossem, 1936   -  Pacific lowlands of southern Mexico (Oaxaca and Chiapas) south to north-western Costa Rica.
