Subspecies
Formerly included Venezuelan Flycatcher (Myiarchus venezuelensis) and Panama Flycatcher (Myiarchus panamensis) as subspecies. Analyses of morphological characters and mitochondrial DNA indicate close affinities with those species and also with Sooty-crowned Flycatcher (Myiarchus phaeocephalus), but precise relationships within that group unclear.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
brunnescens Zimmer, JT & Phelps, 1946 - Core range a narrow belt of llanos in south-western Venezuela (Táchira and Portuguesa east to north-western Bolívar) and extreme north-eastern Colombia.
ferox (Gmelin, 1789) - Amazon Basin (from eastern slopes of Andes in southern Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and northern Bolivia) east to eastern and southern Venezuela, the Guianas and Brazil.
australis Hellmayr, 1927 - Lowlands from south-eastern Bolivia, central Brazil (through southern Mato Grosso, southern Goiás, southern Minas Gerais) and south through drainages of R Paraguay, R Paraná and R Uruguay to Argentina (south to southern Corrientes) and extreme south-western Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil); possibly also northern and western Uruguay.
