Habitat
Thorny desert, xerophytic steppes and mesquite savannas including open thorn-woodland dominated by mesquite (Prosopsis) and acacia (Acacia) where trees are widely separated by sparse ground cover of grasses and herbs, agriculture reserves and other modified/planted habitats such as hedgerows and patches between fields, and occasionally in isolated Prosopsis groves in otherwise barren desert. From sea-level - 350 m, occasionally up to 500 m.
Voice
Dawn song consists of alternated 'huit' notes and rasping whistles. Also gives repeated rasping hiccup notes in song and in response to intruders. A descending 'huit' note is given as a contact call while foraging.

Phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial DNA suggests that this species is either the sister to all others of genus or more closely allied to Rhytipterna.
