Subspecies
Usually considered closely allied with Little Ground-tyrant (Muscisaxicola fluviatilis), but recent phylogenetic work does not suggest so close a relationship.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
niceforoi Zimmer, JT, 1947 - Northern part of eastern Andes of Colombia.
rufescens von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1896 - Ecuador.
maculirostris d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837 - Breeds Peru, Bolivia, Chile and western Argentina (Jujuy south to Santa Cruz); southern populations migrate north.
