Subspecies
Formerly placed in a monotypic genus, Pyrope, on basis of primary structure of male.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
pyrope (Kittlitz, 1830) - Cand southern Chile (from Aconcagua) and south-western Argentina (from Neuquén) south to Tierra del Fuego. Winters in northern Chile (southern Antofagasta to Coquimbo).
fortis Philippi Bañados & Johnson, AW, 1946 - Chiloé I, in south-central Chile.
