Subspecies
Formerly treated as conspecific with Cordilleran Flycatcher (Empidonax occidentalis). Separated on grounds of differences in voice, morphology and allozymes, but this treatment questioned by some authorities. Further study is required. Sometimes Yellowish Flycatcher (Empidonax flavescens) considered conspecific. Channel Is subspecies insulicola possibly a separate species, differs from mainland populations in morphology, voice, habitat use and genetics.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • difficilis Baird, 1858   -  Breeds from south-eastern Alaska south to southern California (generally west of Sierra Nevadas) and extreme north-western Mexico (northern Baja California). Winters western Mexico (south to southern Baja California, Sinaloa and Oaxaca).
  • insulicola Oberholser, 1897   -  Breeds on Channel Is, off southern California (USA); winter range unknown.
  • cineritius Brewster, 1888   -  Sierra de la Laguna (Victoria Mts), in Cape District (southern Baja California).
