Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland and montane forest, subtropical and tropical dry and moist shrubland, dry savanna. From sea-level - 2,650 m.

Range (Guide)
Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay (B), Venezuela.

Subspecies
Subspecies rufescens distinctive, possibly a separate species.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • furfurosus (Thayer & Bangs, 1905)   -  South-western Costa Rica (Téraba Valley) and western Panama (including Pearl Is).
  • fasciatus (Müller, 1776)   -  Venezuela, Trinidad, the Guianas, northern Brazil (Amapá), Colombia (except south-west) and eastern Ecuador.
  • crypterythrus (Sclater, PL, 1861)   -  South-western Colombia, western Ecuador and north-western and northern Peru. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Mouse-grey Flycatcher (Myiophobus crypterythrus).
  • rufescens (Salvadori, 1864)   -  Western Peru and extreme northern Chile. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Rufescent Flycatcher (Myiophobus rufescens).
  • saturatus (von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1906)   -  Eastern Peru.
  • auriceps (Gould & Gray, GR, 1839)   -  South-eastern Peru, western Brazil, northern and eastern Bolivia, northern Argentina and western Paraguay.
  • flammiceps (Temminck, 1822)   -  Eastern Brazil and eastern Paraguay south to north-eastern Argentina and Uruguay.
