Subspecies
Most closely allied with Flavescent Flycatcher (Myiophobus flavicans), Orange-crested Flycatcher (Myiophobus phoenicomitra) and Unadorned Flycatcher (Myiophobus inornatus).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

roraimae (Salvin & Godman, 1883) - Southern and south-eastern Venezuela and western Guyana.
sadiecoatsae (Dickerman & Phelps Jr, 1987) - Cerro de la Neblina, on border between southern Venezuela and north-western Brazil.
rufipennis Carriker, 1932 - Very locally in eastern Colombia, Ecuador, south-eastern Peru and north-western Bolivia.
