Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest, high altitude shrubland. From 1,000 - 3,650 m, occasionally to 900 m.

Range (Guide)
Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Venezuela.

Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Subspecies
Apparently closely related to White-crested Elaenia (Elaenia albiceps) and the two possibly hybridize in Ecuador. Geographically remote subspecies olivina has been considered a separate species, which may be preferable treatment. Position of davidwillardi unclear.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • pallatangae Sclater, 1861   -  Andes of southern Colombia and Ecuador.
  • intensa Zimmer, JT, 1941   -  Andes of Peru.
  • exsul Todd, 1952   -  Known only from type locality of Incachaca (Cochabamba), in Bolivia.
  • olivina Salvin and Godman, 1884   -  Tepui region of southern Venezuela and adjacent northern Brazil and Guyana.
  • davidwillardi Dickerman and Phelps, Jr, 1987   -  Cerro de la Neblina, in extreme southern Venezuela (southern Amazonas).
